Chiedu Ebie has served since July 2015 as commissioner of basic and secondary education in Delta State, Nigeria. His current portfolio includes a long-range assignment to review the policies and infrastructure of the primary and post-primary educational system in the state, with a focus on future improvements. While Delta State’s people and their government have expressed a strong commitment to education, the state and the country lag in significant respects. Among the challenges facing the region are inadequate educational infrastructure at multiple levels, low teacher pay, and a lack of basic facilities conducive to learning.
The Nigerian government and educational authorities have written and spoken extensively on the value of a high-quality educational system to the further development of the country. Education has the ability to transform this rapidly developing nation, by building up the capacity of each individual citizen and the overall productivity and effectiveness of the greater society.
