The Mercedes team’s history traces back to Germany in the early days of the original Grand Prix, during which time the German government funded the team and one of its rivals to build the most technically advanced racing automobile seen yet. Over the next several years, various circumstances led the team to withdraw and reenter motor racing. Since its return to the scene in 1993, Mercedes has become a big name in the sport’s community.
It began by supplying engines to a New Zealand-based team that helped it win three championships, but blossomed with the addition of drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Rosberg scored the team its first comeback with the 2012 win in China, and Hamilton’s skill on the track took the team to 11 of its 16 wins in 2013. Hamilton also claimed the championship title for Mercedes that year and the following year.
A combination of Hamilton’s and Rosberg’s skill and Mercedes’ advanced engineering has led the team to the top spot in motor racing. Released testing results for the upcoming 2015 season presented Mercedes with the best performance times and a 0.2-second advantage. Furthermore, Hamilton and Rosberg continue to hone their skills. Childhood friends and longtime racing rivals, they share a history of racing go-karts as children. Their rivalry came to a head in 2014 as the two drivers battled for the championship title, although Hamilton stepped out victorious.
